Education ED vs DTV — two paths for under-50 long-stayers
Education ED was the go-to visa for foreigners under 50 who wanted to live in Thailand without retirement age or work permit. Then DTV launched in 2024. For most candidates DTV now wins, but ED still has its place.
The 60-second answer
DTV wins for almost everyone. 5-year multi-entry vs 1-year renewals. ฿10,000 total fee (amortised ฿2,000/yr) vs ฿20-40,000/yr tuition. No attendance requirement vs 80% mandatory. No school verification vs MOE-accreditation hassle.
ED is still useful if you (a) genuinely want to learn Thai language or Muay Thai, (b) cannot prove $80k/yr income or 500k THB liquid for DTV eligibility, or (c) need a bridge while building toward DTV qualification or sponsorship.
Income requirement
ED: no income requirement, but you must pay tuition (฿15-80k/year depending on school tier). DTV: $80k/yr income OR 500k THB liquid bank balance. For low-income foreigners ED is the only option.
Stay length
ED: 1-year visa renewed annually, capped at 5 years total. DTV: 5-year multi-entry visa, 180 days per stay, can leave and return freely. No annual renewal.
Attendance + accountability
ED: schools must report 80% attendance to immigration. Many "ED schools" sell visas with light attendance — but enforcement crackdowns in 2024-2025 caught dozens of foreigners and several school operators. MOE accreditation now actively required.
DTV: no attendance obligation. You are not enrolled in anything.
Hidden costs
ED total annual: ฿15-80k tuition + ฿1,900 extension + ฿1,900 re-entry permit if leaving. DTV total amortised: ฿2,000/yr.
Family
ED: each family member must enroll separately. DTV: brings spouse + dependent kids on companion DTV-O.
Education ED categories
Thai language school, Muay Thai gym (counts as education under MOE), Buddhist studies, IB schools for kids, undergraduate/graduate university enrolment.
DTV categories
Remote work (foreign employer/client), Soft Power activities (Muay Thai training, Thai cooking class, Thai language, Thai cultural studies), Medical treatment (e.g., long-term dental, IVF, gender affirmation). The Soft Power category covers most ED-equivalent activities.
Verdict
If you can prove DTV eligibility, switch from ED to DTV — saves ฿15-80k/yr and removes attendance hassle. If you are training Muay Thai full-time and have foreign income, DTV Soft Power is the perfect fit. ED stays relevant for low-income foreigners and short-term language students.
