Non-O-A vs Non-O-X — two different retirement routes
Non-O-A and Non-O-X are different retirement categories for applicants aged 50 or older. O-A is the 1-year route; O-X publishes an initial stay of up to 5 years and a possible further 5 years, subject to its conditions and annual qualification check. Neither is a promise of fewer local office visits.
Core comparison rechecked 13 September 2026: central MFA O-A guidance, Consular Affairs O-X guidance, TGIA’s O-A insurance instructions, and the Kuala Lumpur and Los Angeles O-X pages. The Los Angeles insurance contradiction remains unresolved.
Non-O-A at-a-glance
- Application location: check the Royal Thai mission responsible for your nationality or permanent residence; do not assume every mission accepts your application.
- Published stay: up to 1 year from entry under central MFA guidance; the permission recorded at arrival controls
- Entry terms: use the responsible mission's current issued-visa terms
- Financial requirement: bank statement showing the local-currency or THB equivalent of 800,000 THB, monthly income of at least 65,000 THB, or a deposit-and-annual-income combination totalling at least 800,000 THB
- Health insurance: checked 13 September 2026, the TGIA O-A guideline publishes USD 100,000 / THB 3,000,000 including COVID-19 for first-year applicants. Its old THB 40,000/400,000 section is labelled renewal before 1 September 2022—not a policy-purchase cutoff or a current automatic exemption.
- In-country extensions: Later extension applications follow the current Immigration checklist
- Available from: Confirm availability and evidence with the Royal Thai mission responsible for your application
Non-O-X at-a-glance
- Application location: the central O-X guidance, rechecked 13 September 2026, names Royal Thai missions for applications abroad and Immigration for applications inside Thailand. Confirm the actual procedure and office before planning.
- Stay structure: as of 13 September 2026, up to 5 years followed by a possible further 5 years if the conditions remain satisfied
- Financial route 1: as of 13 September 2026, THB 3,000,000 in a fixed-deposit account at a Thai commercial bank
- Financial route 2: as of 13 September 2026, THB 1,800,000 in that account plus annual income of at least THB 1,200,000, with the balance reaching THB 3,000,000 within 1 year
- Health insurance: as rechecked 13 September 2026, the central MFA page and Kuala Lumpur publish THB 40,000 outpatient / THB 400,000 inpatient. The Los Angeles page conflicts with itself: its eligibility summary gives USD 100,000 / THB 3,000,000, while its detailed insurance section gives THB 40,000 outpatient / THB 400,000 inpatient.
- Maintenance balance: as of 13 September 2026, the qualifying funds stay for at least 1 year; afterward at least THB 1,500,000 remains and withdrawals are spent in Thailand
- Ongoing checks: the official O-X page publishes annual qualification checks; ordinary 90-day address reporting and TM30 duties remain separate
- Nationality limit: O-X covers the 14 nationalities listed by the central MFA source, not every foreign national. Verify nationality and application jurisdiction before committing funds.

The immigration office visit difference
O-A grants a stay under the issuing post's terms. Later in-country retirement extensions follow Immigration’s criteria, including the O-A-specific health condition in Order No. 12/2568, clause 2.22(6), rechecked 13 September 2026. O-X instead publishes an initial period of up to 5 years, a possible further 5 years and an annual qualification check. Neither route removes the separate address-reporting and residence-notification duties. The earlier local-process review on 1 August 2026 did not establish a universal Jomtien visit count, bank-letter age or same-day process. Confirm current local instructions with the accepting office.
Health insurance considerations
Both routes have published health-insurance requirements, but the figures cannot be copied between them. As of 13 September 2026, TGIA publishes O-A at USD 100,000 / THB 3,000,000 per policy year. For O-X, the central MFA page and Kuala Lumpur publish THB 40,000 outpatient / THB 400,000 inpatient. As rechecked 13 September 2026, the Los Angeles page is internally inconsistent: its eligibility summary gives USD 100,000 / THB 3,000,000, while its detailed insurance section gives THB 40,000 outpatient / THB 400,000 inpatient. Confirm the controlling requirement with the Royal Thai mission accepting the application; see the verified insurance guide.
Who should choose Non-O-A
O-A has lower published financial thresholds and is not restricted to the O-X list of 14 nationalities. O-X uses the higher Thai fixed-deposit or deposit-plus-income routes stated above. The responsible mission or Immigration office must confirm the application channel and assess the evidence; O-X is not an overseas-only route.
Who should choose Non-O-X
O-X is the higher-capital route for applicants who meet the named-country, age, Thai-bank, income, insurance and annual-review conditions. As verified 13 September 2026, the central financial criteria do not say that a condo, bond or fund holding substitutes for the required Thai fixed-deposit account. The authority assesses the actual bank and income evidence.
