Shooting paid commercial work for Thai clients on Thai soil constitutes work and requires a work permit. Shooting for foreign clients with foreign payment is permitted on DTV. Drone work has additional CAAT (Civil Aviation Authority Thailand) licensing requirements regardless of visa.

Pathway 1 — DTV (best for foreign-paying clients)

Wedding photographers serving destination weddings (foreigners flying in to marry in Phuket/Krabi/Pattaya), commercial photographers with foreign brand clients, stock-photo sellers, and content creators selling presets/courses/Lightroom packs to foreign markets — DTV fits perfectly. 5-year multi-entry, foreign income proof required ($80k/yr or 500k THB).

Pathway 2 — Non-B + work permit (Thai-client work)

If a Thai studio, agency, hotel, or wedding planner hires you on contract, Non-B + work permit applies. ฿50k/month minimum declared salary. Annual renewal. Suits photographers with stable Thai-market work.

Pathway 3 — Own production company

Thai limited company + Non-B + work permit. ฿2M paid-up. 4 Thai employees per foreign permit. Suits established studios serving both Thai and foreign markets.

Pathway 4 — Smart Visa S

For creative-industry specialists endorsed by BOI/Ministry of Culture as bringing rare expertise. Niche but exists.

Drone-specific rules

Any commercial drone work in Thailand requires CAAT pilot license and drone registration — visa class is separate. Foreign drone pilots can register through CAAT regardless of visa, but commercial shoots also need work permit (so Non-B path) or foreign-client DTV justification.

Pattaya market

Pattaya has ~50 active expat wedding photographers, dozens of commercial shooters, and a growing drone scene. Wedding packages: ฿35-150k. Hotel commercial day rate: ฿15-40k. Stock photographers benefit from Pattaya cost-of-living arbitrage.
