How to switch from ED visa to DTV — Pattaya step-by-step guide

Thousands of Pattaya residents are currently on Non-Immigrant ED visas originally obtained for language school, Muay Thai training, or other study categories. Since DTV launched in May 2024, many ED holders have found that DTV better matches their actual situation — particularly those working remotely for overseas clients and using the school primarily as a visa mechanism. This guide covers the exact switch process from ED to DTV, including the in-Thailand departure step, consulate application, and Jomtien re-entry process.

Can you switch ED to DTV inside Thailand?

No. DTV must be applied from outside Thailand — at a Thai consulate abroad or via the e-visa portal (in countries where e-DTV is available). You cannot walk into Jomtien Immigration and ask to convert your ED to a DTV. The process requires departure from Thailand, consulate application, and re-entry on the DTV. This is the key practical consideration — plan the switch around a natural travel break, not an emergency.

Step 1: Do not renew your ED before you leave

If your ED extension is due within the next 3 months and you are planning to switch to DTV, you face a timing choice. Renewing the ED for another 3 months and then departing for DTV application is one option — it gives you a longer runway but costs ฿1,900 and another quarter of school fees. Alternatively, allow the ED to expire and depart Thailand before expiry to apply for DTV. Do not overstay — an overstay on any Thai visa creates complications for DTV applications at some consulates. Time your departure to coincide with your ED's quarter-end if possible.

Step 2: Prepare DTV application documents

Gather before leaving Thailand:

Step 3: Choose where to apply

Most Pattaya ED holders choose one of these routes:

Step 4: Enter Thailand on DTV and process Jomtien extension if needed

On re-entry with your DTV, you receive a 180-day stay permission stamp. If you plan to stay beyond 180 days before your next departure, extend at Jomtien Immigration within the 180-day period (not before Day 150 — too early is rejected). Extension process at Jomtien: TM7 form, passport, TM30 receipt, income/savings evidence, ฿1,900 fee. Jomtien has processed DTV extensions since H2 2024 and the process is now routine.

Inform your school

If you were enrolled in a Thai language school or Muay Thai gym on ED sponsorship, notify the school of your departure and planned DTV switch. The school will typically cancel your enrolment and may refund unused prepaid tuition depending on their cancellation policy. Get confirmation in writing that your student status is formally ended — this prevents any ED extension paperwork continuing in your name after you have departed.

TM30 on return

When you return to Thailand on DTV and settle at your accommodation, the landlord must file a new TM30 within 24 hours. Even if you lived at the same address on ED, re-entry creates a new TM30 obligation. Confirm the landlord files it — many experienced Pattaya landlords handle this automatically but verify at tm30.immigration.go.th. Missing TM30 on DTV entry creates the same problems as on any other visa when you arrive at Jomtien for extension.
