Three things to understand about healthcare in Thailand
1. Private hospitals are excellent and affordable. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, Pattaya International Hospital, and BNH-tier facilities offer English-speaking specialists, modern equipment, and direct billing with major international insurers. A specialist consultation runs ฿1,000-3,500. An MRI is ฿15-30k. A heart bypass is ฿400k-700k — vs $80-200k in the US.
2. Public hospitals are cheap but English-limited. Banglamung Hospital (the public hospital in Pattaya) charges ฿30-100 per visit but expect Thai-language signage, longer waits, and shared rooms. Useful for emergencies if private hospitals are inaccessible. Most expats default to private.
3. Insurance is mandatory for some visa classes. O-A retirement visa requires THB 3M inpatient + THB 40k outpatient coverage. LTR requires USD 50,000 inpatient or self-insurance via USD 100k bank balance. Marriage Non-O, Retirement Non-O, and DTV do not require insurance but it is strongly recommended.
