Thailand visa for English teachers
TEFL-certified teachers looking at international schools, government schools, private language centers, or online teaching from Thailand. Here is the legal map for English teachers in 2026.
The legal frame for English teachers
Teaching English at a Thai school is regulated work that requires a Non-B visa, work permit, and (for K-12 schools) a teaching license from the Ministry of Education. Teaching online for foreign students from Thailand is permitted on a DTV. Informal private tutoring of Thai students for cash is illegal without a work permit and is enforced sporadically.
Pathway 1 — Non-B + work permit (the standard for school employment)
An international school, government school, or licensed private language center sponsors you on Non-B + work permit. Minimum declared salary for foreign English teachers: ฿35,000-50,000/month at language centers, ฿50,000-80,000/month at government schools, ฿80,000-200,000/month at international schools. The school handles all paperwork; you pay the work permit fee (฿3,000/yr) and visa extension (฿1,900/yr).
For K-12 teaching, you also need a Thai teaching license (or temporary license while you work toward it). TEFL/TESOL 120-hour minimum is now standard. Bachelor's degree mandatory.
Pathway 2 — DTV for online English teachers
If your students are foreign (paying VIPKid, Cambly, italki, GoGoKid, etc.), the DTV explicitly allows this as "remote work for foreign employers/clients." 5-year multi-entry, 180 days per stay, no work permit needed. Income proof: $80k/yr or 500k THB liquid.
Pathway 3 — Education ED for Thai language students (transition path)
Many English teachers arrive on Education ED while waiting for school sponsorship to materialize. Legal grey: ED does not authorize paid work, so any English teaching you do for Thai cash is illegal employment. Use this only as a bridge.
Pathway 4 — Set up your own language school
Thai limited company + MOE registration as a private language school. Capital: ฿2-5M depending on scope. 4 Thai employees per foreign work permit. Realistic for established TEFL trainers with track record. Brand-new operators rarely succeed.
Pattaya teaching market
Pattaya has 30+ private language centers, 10+ international schools (Regents International, Garden International, etc.), and government school positions in Chonburi province. Salary range: ฿35k (entry-level language center) to ฿250k (international school department head). Most expat teachers cluster in Jomtien and Naklua.
